Scar on mature ponderosa pine from a lightning strike, which usually follows the moist cambium and phloem under the bark. The lightning energy instantly vaporizes the water, causing a steam explosion that throws off the bark. The tree often survives the injury. Jemez Mountains, New Mexico, © David A. Ponton
