Prescribed fire in ponderosa pine forest on Escobas Mesa burns as spot fires into the night of 4/24/1998. This spring burn was actually a preliminary burn to the June prescribed burn in the same area. This area was burned in the La Mesa wildfire of 1977. Smoke is illuminated by fires underneath, creating the dramatic yellow and orange plume through a time exposure on film. Star trails are created by the time exposure, and the distant lights of Santa Fe are visible. © 1998 David A. Ponton
