A segment of a rainbow formed over Otowi Mesa, with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the distance. The area of volcanic tuff on the east side of the Jemez Mountains formed a plateau known as the Pajarito Plateau, which eroded into canyons and mesas composed of the distinctive soft rock. The caves at the base of the cliff are abandoned dwellings of Ancestral Puebloans. Pajarito Plateau east of Los Alamos, Jemez Mountains, New Mexico © David A. Ponton
